Start by evaluating the previous year. The best way to begin creating new goals is to acknowledge your achievements and successes from the last 12 months. Look at what goals were the most beneficial and effective throughout your year. This will also highlight if there were any that you didn’t quite achieve. It is best to continue working towards completing any objectives that weren’t fulfilled before the year was out. Whether this was down to time or resources, begin with these to kickstart 2019 with a real focus.

 

  1. Make your goals realistic

It is great to have big ambitions but make your yearly goals achievable. Setting goals that are unrealistic will only be de-motivating and make you feel like a failure when they are not completed. It is important to understand what your resources are and what your limitations will be throughout the year to help you attain your goals. Having a series of goals orientating around different timeframes will help with this. Every smaller goal and one-year strategy are stepping stones to achieving a longer 10-year plan.

Break down each goal into smaller targets. Fulfilling these each week or month will be much more rewarding and show progress throughout the year. Make sure milestones are precise and within your control. If a goal for 2019 is to get a work promotion, then set yourself monthly milestones for how you can increase your performance to ensure this. A smaller milestone might be to seek a number of new clients each month or deliver an outstanding presentation. Acknowledging the opportunities and activities you are undertaking to action the overall goal will show the progress you are making and give you a boost in confidence as you go.

Motivation is the key to actually striving towards and achieving your goal. Make sure the goals you are setting yourself are ones that you truly want. Whether it is personal, work or financial it must be your own vision. Having a passion for your goal will help to keep you on track throughout the year.

If you have now created goals that are realistic, manageable and exciting, then have confidence that you can achieve them. Don’t wait till tomorrow to start – start on your journey today with strength, positivity and commitment. There will, of course, be hurdles and obstacles along the way but that is what makes achieving your goals even more rewarding. Your goals should constantly challenge you, resulting in not only the achievement itself but continued growth and development.
